At its annual colloquium in Melbourne last weekend, the Judicial Conference of Australia elected a new President, Justice Judith Kelly of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory and Vice President, Justice Glenn Martin of the Supreme Court of Queensland.

Justice Judith Kelly noted with concern observations made by Judge Robyn Tupman of the District Court of New South Wales (reported in the Sydney Morning Herald on 5 October 2018) about judges being potentially at risk as a result of overwork from a caseload described by Judge Tupman as “ridiculous, absurd and offensive to the people of New South Wales”.

Justice Kelly said that the JCA strongly supported the need to adequately resource courts at all levels and in particular to appoint a sufficient number of judges to properly administer justice within a reasonable time and without imposing an unreasonable workload on judges which may compromise their physical and mental health.
